Data Scientist - VR/17681
Currently recruiting for an experienced Data Scientist on a contract basis for an Oil and Gas client based in Aberdeen. The contract will initially last until the end of the year, however, it is anticipated to be a long-term contract.
Joining the Digital Transformation Team, the Data Scientist will make significant and material impacts to the business via:
- Vast amounts of historical and real time data, which could be further utilised to extract greater value.

Through the use of data analytics, the Data Scientist will support projects in data visualisation, advanced analytics, predictive analytics and machine learning. The Data Scientist will have the following main duties and responsibilities:
- Enabling the use of advanced analytics to allow Geoscientists, Engineers, Technologists and Technicians to access and interpret the critical data needed to make good decisions.
- Applying data mining and machine learning techniques, perform statistical analysis, and build high-quality prediction systems that solve business problems.
- Helping build the data science and machine learning capability by developing best practices. Contributing and sharing innovative solutions within the team and identifying and helping establish the required technology and infrastructure.
- Advising on the most appropriate methodology to solve individual data science problems.
- Clearly articulating and presenting design solutions, rationale and trade-offs.
- Working with Domain Leads and Technologists to identify data relevant for analysis.
- Working with large data sets from disparate sources to understand linkages.
- Monitoring technology readiness of new data science techniques to determine when they reach adequate maturity for application.
Education / Experience:
- Applicants will be expected to be educated to Degree Level in a relevant discipline (Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics etc.).
- A relevant professional qualification in data science, data management, data governance, advanced analytics, visualisation etc. would be preferred.
- Previous and specific experience in a similar Data Scientist / Analyst type role is essential.
- The successful candidate will be expected to be fully familiar with all standard Data Science techniques, and should have experience in some of the following areas:
- Machine learning / deep learning, Bayesian models, neural networks, advanced clustering, information retrieval, natural language processing, recommendation engines, training / learning algorithms and spatial statistics.
- Applicants will be expected to be highly proficient with a variety of typical Data Science software tools and programming languages, such as R, Python, SQL, Hadoop and Apache Spark.
- The ability to develop solutions with TIBCO Spotfire is desirable.
- Applicants will be expected to be able to work with unstructured or incomplete datasets.
- Applicants will be expected to be able to explain data science solutions effectively to non-data scientists and to non-technical business stakeholders.
- The successful candidate will be expected to possess experience in cloud computing, including an understanding of cloud technology, cloud architecture and how to design, develop and manage robust and secure solutions hosted in the cloud.
