Supporting the Managing Director and Management Team to ensure the company serves the best interests of its Members by delivering High-quality and cost-effective technical services, Standards support, Relevant training courses via a host of platforms and health and safety support to Members.

    

Responsible for a team of:

  • Technical Advisers.
  • Training Manager.
  • Administrators.

    

Location and type of work

A mix of office-based and homeworking with travel as required within Scotland, the UK and Europe to attend meetings, visit Members and attend functions etc.

    

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading the team in the provision of technical standards, health and safety and services to Members.
  • Acting as Head of Certification for company Certification of Construction Scheme.
  • Lead and develop online certification scheme.
  • Acting as Secretary to the Registration Board.
  • Lead the team in developing, delivering and promoting high-quality training courses.
  • Participate in the work of the Management Team and provide effective leadership of the Technical Services team.
  • Assist the Management Team as required.
  • To always act according to the staff’s shared values and customer service standards.

    

Detailed guidance

The following list, though not exhaustive, comprises tasks which it is considered are likely to be essential in delivering the key responsibilities of the job.

  • Leading the team in the provision of technical standards, health and safety and services to Members.
  • Ensuring that advice is provided to Members on technical matters, technical standards, and health and safety enquiries. Leading the Team to ensure that the company provides support, advice, and information to specifiers, consultants, local authorities, and Scottish Government staff to the benefit of Members.
  • Ensuring Member advice and helpline services are adequately resourced.
  • Ensuring operation of an Inspection Service aligned to a documented quality management system to ensure the continuation of UKAS accreditation to ISO/IEC 17020 as amended.
  • Ensuring all Members and applicants for membership are technically assessed to the requirements established by the company’s Central Board and Registration Board as documented in the Assessment Criteria.
  • Acting as Secretary to the Electrotechnical Committee and ensure it is effectively supported and that actions or policies given to or agreed by the Committee are actioned.
  • Promoting, growing, and managing the ‘Inspection on Request’ service. Managing the provision of health and safety services delivered internally and through external partners where required.
  • Acting as Head of Certification for Company Certification of Construction Scheme.
  • Overseeing the Certification of Construction Scheme and develop strategies to embed it as the norm for Scotland’s electrical installations.
  • Ensuring all scheme members and prospective members are technically assessed to the requirements established and documented in the guide.
  • Monitoring the performance of the scheme and ensure provision of regular reports to the Building Standards Division.
  • Ensuring appropriate resources are in place to administer the scheme and ensure proper scrutiny in the event of complaints about the scheme or the conduct of its members.

    

Lead and develop company’s online certification offering

  • Working with the developers, ensuring that scheme meets the demands and needs of users and is intuitive and user friendly.
  • Ensuring that the Technical Team is familiar with the online processes.
  • Ensuring the provision of a suitable software platform to deliver certificates and allow proper management of the scheme.
  • Working with colleagues in other Functions to promote the growth and use.

    

Acting as Secretary to the Registration Board

  • Acting as the Secretary to the Registration Board and ensure it is properly and effectively supported and that actions or policies given to or agreed by the Board are actioned.
  • Providing policy proposals on membership assessment criteria and processes.
  • Establishing and monitoring adherence to relevant technical assessment criteria and procedures in conjunction with The Registration Board.
  • Managing appropriate technical appeal and disciplinary procedures in conjunction with the Registration Board and company Secretary.
  • Leading the team in developing, delivering and promoting high-quality training courses.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Employment and Skills and Training Manager, developing and maintaining a training strategy that will position the company as the training provider of choice for the industry and its stakeholders.
  • Maintaining an overview of the training environment to ensure all means of virtual and physical delivery are considered.
  • Seeking to make the maximum return on company training courses.
  • Appointing sufficient resource to manage and operate the training service.
  • Supporting the Director of Employment and Skills in the development of top-up training and technology update courses and provide representation to external skills organisations.
  • Participating in the work of the Management Team and providing effective leadership of the Technical Services Team.
  • Direct team workflow to achieve Mission and Strategic Objectives through the Business Plan. Delegating, setting and monitoring objectives within these plans.
  • Maintaining effective two-way communication with staff; holding formal Function meetings, at least quarterly, reviewing staff job specifications and objectives regularly, and conducting performance reviews in line with current policy to motivate staff and contribute to an efficient, balanced, and fulfilling work environment.
  • Contributing to the creation of the Business Plan and budgets ensuring delivery of tasks within budgetary controls.
  • Contributing to the Annual Report to communicate activities and progress.
  • Providing reports for all relevant internal committees and maintain effective cooperation and support for other Functions to contribute to the achievement of the Strategic Objectives.
  • Assisting the Management Team as required.
  • Where required, attending meetings and social / business functions with external organisations and Members.
  • Maintaining and growing contact with industry influencers and stakeholders to promote the company and its Members on a regular basis.
  • Directing and overseeing input to consultations in the training, standards, technical, and health and safety fields, and where appropriate, assisting all other members of the Management Team on any other consultation issues.

    

Experience / Knowledge Required:

  • Degree or equivalent level qualification in an electrical engineering subject or HNC/D in an electrical engineering subject, plus 10 years’ experience in a similar environment or Holds, or is eligible to hold, an S/JIB Approved Electrician or Technician card for a minimum period of 10 years.
  • Significant experience of working at a senior level within either electrical, engineering, utilities or service industries, or in a trade association.
  • Experience of managing and coordinating the activities of a successful team.
  • Experience of managing and coordinating the development and delivery of training courses.
