Currently recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer on a permanent staff basis for an oil and gas service company based in Portlethen, Aberdeenshire. This will be a full-time office-based role and the successful candidate will be working a 37-hour week.

    

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the engineering design of new and modified tools, products and equipment from the customer need / concept development stage through to a fully developed commercial product.  The Mechanical Design Engineer will also provide operational day-to-day support.  The post holder will work with various product line offerings, including pressure control, skid based hydraulic control units, downhole tools and ancillaries. 

        

The Mechanical Design Engineer will have the following main duties and responsibilities:

  • Undertaking a wide variety of engineering design from updating existing designs to working on new designs in line with business needs.
  • Designing to requirements and specifications, ensuring appropriate cost and quality of product.
  • Providing input to specifications and ensuring a full specification is available and understood prior to commencing work.
  • Producing the relevant supporting documentation to ensure verification of design.
  • Design models and drawings.
  • Calculations.
  • Assisting with regulatory submission and certification files.
  • Test plans, procedures and reports.
  • Operations and maintenance manuals.
  • Assisting with technical support - check the work of other Design Engineers or Design Draughters, as appropriate.
  • Assisting with hands-on work during assembly and testing of prototype or new designs.
  • Supervising and mentoring Draughters / Trainee Design Engineers on specific tasks and track their project tasks on larger projects.
  • Supporting field testing.
  • Project engineering level work, as required.
  • Supporting and promoting continuous improvement in engineering processes and standards.

         

Experience / Qualifications:

  • A degree qualification in a Mechanical Engineering discipline is essential.
  • Chartered Engineer status would be preferred.
  • Previous experience in a similar Mechanical Design Engineer type, within the North Sea oil and gas industry, is essential.
  • Experience with oilfield surface and/or downhole equipment is essential.
  • Applicants should have experience in the design of oilfield products, such as hydraulic control / injection units, pressure control equipment, wireline / slickline tools, structural frames and thru tubing tools.
  • Proficiency in using 2D or 3D CAD software is essential (Autodesk Inventor experience would be preferred).
  • Experience with performing calculations / analysis, pertaining to product design using appropriate software, is essential.
  • Applicants should have knowledge of material selection, including metals, plastics and elastomers for oilfield use.
  • Experience with failure analysis would be preferred.
