Intellectual Property Engineer - VR/28915
Currently recruiting for an Intellectual Property Engineer on a permanent staff basis for a global leader in the subsea industry.
This role would suit a candidate who holds a strong mechanical/technical engineering background and who is looking for a career change. It would suit an individual who is interested in stepping away from traditional engineering and is keen to work with the business. This role will likely represent a big learning curve so it would suit an individual who is keen to learn. The company is seeking someone with great communication/presentation skills, who has experience in building relationships with key stakeholders.
This role would suit a candidate who holds a mechanical engineering degree, or similar, and who has an interest in Law. A legal background, or previous IP experience, would be preferred.
The Intellectual Property (IP) Engineer is accountable for capturing new inventions and preparing dossiers for external IP attorneys for patent filings. The primary mission of the role is to assist the inventors in understanding and describing their inventions and performing analysis of freedom of operation.
The Intellectual Property Engineer will have the following main duties and responsibilities:
- Communicating IP of specialist technologies to the wider business to encourage usage of IP assets.
- Assisting the inventors in preparing the Invention Disclosure Form (IDF).
- Performing bibliographic analysis on technical topics and assisting Technology Managers for technology intelligence on the patent side.
- Assessing patentability of new inventions and transfer dossier to the Intellectual Property Manager.
- Assisting in preparing dossiers for external Patent Attorney to draft a patent application.
- Identifying technology trends and related 3rd party IP (freedom of operation).
- Completing technical information in internal IP databases and SharePoint.
- Assisting in tool and software assessment/benchmarking for improving the IP activity.
- Assisting in developing IP licensing.
- Assisting in reviewing author submissions for conference for compliance and protection of IP assets (part of Technical Paper Committee).
- Maintaining a watch on third parties for emerging technology trends and for infringement of IP assets, as well as identifying opportunities.
Experience / Qualifications:
- A degree qualification is essential. A Mechanical Engineering Degree qualification, or similar, would be preferred.
- Previous experience in the energy/oil & gas/subsea sectors would be preferred.
- Previous experience in a similar role would be preferred.
- Applicants will be expected to have held Senior Engineer level roles.
- A legal background, or previous IP experience, would be preferred.
- Applicants should be accustomed to conducting training courses and presentations.
- Applicants should be able to understand both technical and legal documents.
