Thorpe Molloy McCulloch are exclusively supporting Braemar Highland Games Centre on their search for a Head of Fundraising and Development. This role will operate on a part-time basis, working from home and is a permanent opportunity. It is the purpose of this role to secure financial sponsorship and funding to allow for the development and growth of the organisation. The organisation is dedicated to the history and future preservation of traditional sport and a keen interest in heritage and culture, alongside practical experience in a similar role would be essential.

   

The Braemar Gathering has been a highlight of the sporting calendar since at least 1832. The organiser of the Gathering is the Braemar Royal Highland Society, which can be traced back to 1815. It remains the oldest surviving Friendly Society in the country.

Nestled beneath bucolic, heather-strewn mountains, the Braemar Gathering is the most prominent and well-attended Highland Games, drawing vast crowds from all over the globe.

Recently constructed, visitors can also enjoy the Braemar Highland Games Centre, which incorporates an exhibition hall, gallery, archive, café and shop. The exhibition explores the living traditions of Highland Games, focusing on the Braemar Gathering and its long-standing royal connections, dating back to Queen Victoria. The Centre showcases all aspects of Highland Games heritage and research – a resource for Games events worldwide, targeting Scottish, UK and worldwide audiences.

The Head of Fundraising and Development will be tasked with securing relevant and varied sponsorship for the Society and all of its various existing interests, as well as providing support to future development plans.

Working closely with the board, you will be responsible for securing financial sponsorship and funding for the Braemar Highland Games Centre to further extend its development, as well as for the Braemar Gathering and the wider interests of the Braemar Royal Highland Society.

    

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

    

  • Devising and delivering a fundraising strategy designed to deliver up to £500k p.a. for a combination of general revenue support, working capital and specific projects, you will research and actively pursue sources of funds in line with the charity’s strategic objectives.
  • This will include applications to trusts, foundations and statutory foundations, as well as taking the lead on brand-led sponsorships with businesses.
  • You will report regularly both to donors and the Board on fundraising progress.
  • You will also work collaboratively with colleagues on the annual events programme and be proactive in identifying opportunities and pursuing appropriate targets.
  • Undertaking due diligence checks on new donors.
  • Helping to produce high quality half-year and end of year reports to donors on the organisation’s activities as well as other reports as required during the year.
  • Developing and maintaining a fundraising database, ensuring that it is regularly kept up to date, adheres to GDPR and funding regulation guidelines and that regular reports and updates are provided to the Treasurer and Board on a monthly basis.
  • Monitoring progress with donation payments and report to Treasurer. The post holder will be responsible for grant reporting and draw-down activities as well as keeping good records, files and information on all aspects of the work to ensure that activities and progress are monitored effectively and are made in accordance with GDPR requirements.

The successful incumbent will be working within a small team dealing with a wide range of issues at any one time so a flexible approach to work, ability to multi-task, and a willingness to work co-operatively with people from a wide range of backgrounds is essential.

    

Essential skills and experience include: 

    

  • A proven record in fundraising or a related activity.
  • Experience of personally managing relationships with individuals and/or corporate partners and the confidence to build new relationships in this role.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Creative and innovative approach to work.
  • Excel, Microsoft word and In-Design skills or equivalent.
  • An interest in issues relating to the culture and heritage of Scottish Highland Gatherings would be beneficial.

   

Hours of work: To be agreed with applicant, however a flexible working approach with an estimate of 2 days per week throughout the year with statutory annual leave would be on offer. Days of work are at discretion of the individual with expectation to have a minimum of 7 days per month dedicated to the role. This role will operate remotely, working from home. A competitive renumeration is on offer for the successful incumbent.
